A large-scale manufacturer of medicines, our client is continuously seeking to increase safety within its production facility. It was identified that ladder or MEWP access to machines at height was no longer feasible or safe.
We were tasked to design a new platform around existing machinery to allow safe access to vessels by operators for maintenance within the processing plant. As part of the design, we had to identify and overcome any obstructions and clashes with existing pipework and machines within a very small area. There was also a limited window for install. All steel works had to comply with our EN1090 standards and the client’s onsite specifications.
To design and fabricate a fixed platform, we had to meet the criteria of the operators, engineers and client. We completed a comprehensive site survey at the outset and found several clashes with existing piping, structural supports and electrical conduits and trays. Because the platform had to fit in a small envelope at height, we proposed to split it in multiple parts, to allow efficient installation around the existing machines. We added the existing clashes to the 3D model with alternative routing lines provided. This allowed the client to appreciate the clashes and arrange for them to be (re)moved before the install date. On approval a full design was completed and manufactured.
As due diligence was carried out at design stage, the install was completed on time and without any clashing issues. The operators can now safely access machinery to carry out maintenance duties. A full Engineering Turnover Package ETOP was generated and handed over to the client allowing full traceability of materials used in the production of the platform. The client resultingly benefits massively in improved safety, time reduction when cleaning and minimised number of operators required.
